Ensiferum – Thalassic [2020]

Ensiferum Thalassic Track List

Thalassic is the eighth studio album by Finnish folk metal band Ensiferum, released on July 10, 2020 via Metal Blade Records. On January 7, 2020, it was announced that the band would begin recording their next album, which will coincide with the 25th anniversary of the band's founding. There will be surprises for admirers of the talent of the artists. The new clean vocalist and keyboardist is Pekka Montin, replacing former vocalist Netta Skog, who played a prominent role in Two Paths (2017). Thalassic is Ensiferum's first single-theme concept album, with songs inspired by history, myths and nautical legends. The first composition, Seafarer’s Dream, begins with an atmospheric intro, with sounds of wind and sea, squeaky wood and a leisurely acoustic guitar. Then an epic orchestral sound is heard in Rum, Women, Victory. Fast drums, the band's typical guitar riff, catchy Folk tunes, melodic solo and harsh vocals by Petri Lindroos. Andromeda tells an ancient Greek myth, showcasing the new vocalist Pekka Montin's abilities. In the fast and melodic Run From The Crushing Tide, the clean and harsh vocals complement each other wonderfully. One With The Sea begins with a beautiful violin by a guest Lassi Logren, then heavy guitars and an orchestra are thrown at us, and the song finally turns into an epic ballad with elements of sadness. Unexpected surprise – Midsummer Magic. Uneven tipsy male voices, light Folk-motive and cheerful melody. At some point, heavy guitars and harsh come in. Thalassic ends with the most epic nine-minute piece by Cold Northland (Väinämöinen Part III), which brings the listener back to the Finnish epic Kalevala.
