Scaled and Icy is the sixth studio album by American music duo Twenty One Pilots, released on May 21, 2021 via Fueled by Ramen and Elektra. On the day of the new album's release, at 8:00 pm ET, the band's first live live show, the Livestream Experience, took place. Scaled and Icy is built around the themes of anxiety, loneliness, boredom and doubt. The duo's new songs keep things moving forward despite setbacks and encourage them to focus on opportunities that are worth using wisely. The album's title is an anagram of "Clancy is dead", a reference to the protagonist of their previous album, Trench (2018). Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Tyler Joseph was forced to write and produce the album for an entire year in his home studio, while Josh Dun created drums in his. The album cover features Trash The Dragon, a blue creature breathing yellow fire from its mouth, unveiled on April 21, 2021, on the day the first single, Shy Away, was released. Album designer Brandon Ryke explained that he found the illustration in a children's book released in the 1860s, which is part of the public domain, so Twenty One Pilots were able to use it for their cover for Scaled And Icy.
