Van Weezer is the fifteenth studio album by American rock band Weezer, dedicated to guitarist Eddie Van Halen, who died of cancer on October 6, 2020, and was released on May 7, 2021 via Crush Music and Atlantic Records. Work on the project began in February 2019. Rivers frontman Cuomo described it this way: the new songs with a hard rock influence are significantly different from the pop and electropop that we used on our previous albums - Pacific Daydream (2017), Teal Album (2019) and Black Album (2019). This will bring the band back to big guitars. Van Weezer can be compared to the fourth studio album Maladroit (2002), which is inspired by hard rock and heavy metal bands of the 1970s and 1980s such as Kiss, Black Sabbath, Metallica and Van Halen. It currently holds the record for the longest lapse of time between the release of two singles for the same album prior to its launch. 239 days passed between The End of the Game (September 10, 2019) and Hero (May 6, 2020). In fact, until the record's release, no playlist was announced.
